DescriptionThe artist and gallerist Dalzell Hatfield (1893-1963) sent this signed, hand-colored Chagall print to Millier as a Christmas card in 1939. The Russian-born Chagall, raised and educated in France, was one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. As a Jewish man, he was forced to move to the U.S. when World War II began, but moved permanently back to France when the war was over. An early modernist, Chagall was associated with several predominant artistic styles, but is perhaps best known for his colorful and whimsical renderings of life in the Jewish shtetls (villages) of old Russia, with floating figures and dancing animals. He created works in almost every artistic medium, from paintings and drawings to illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, large-scale murals (including the ceiling of the Paris Opera) and prints.
