DescriptionRexford Elson Brandt was born in San Diego, grew up in Riverside, achieved his undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and did his graduate work at Stanford. He was a central figure in the California Scene painting movement, along with other original members of the “California Group,” including Phil Dike, Milford Zornes and Millard Sheets. Brandt painted many depictions of the sea and boat-filled bays, harbors and inlets, with watercolor his preferred medium. He partnered with fellow painter Dike in 1947 to found the Brandt-Dike Summer School of Painting, and he also authored many influential instructional books, including "Watercolor with Rex Brandt" and "Seeing With a Painter’s Eye."
