DescriptionOrange-based artist Marinus Welman is 91 years young and still going strong. Born in the Netherlands, he was five years old when World War II began, and in the hardships that followed, the young artist scrounged precious art supplies to create his first works, portraying bombed-out cities and starving people. After the war’s end, he started formal art training at the Kunstnijverheids school and later attended sessions at the Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten, both in Amsterdam. After spending time working on a tramp freighter, which took him all over the world, he packed up his paints and moved to California at the age of 21. Since then, he has painted all over the Golden State, capturing many forms of the state’s raw beauty, including this dramatic view of Morro Bay, which he considers one of the most inspiring coastlines in the world.
