DescriptionArtist notes: Imagine a 22-year-old being permitted to set up his easel on a drilling platform. The men, wearing fedoras, went about their duties puzzled by my enthusiasm. They though why waste your time painting our dirty, smelly world? With the cool breeze of the Pacific Ocean (the scene is Signal Hill) sweeping across my easel, mingled with the heavy odor of crude, the basso vibrations permeating the area and rocking my entire body- I felt one with the exploration.
