DescriptionGeorge Post was born in Oakland, received his art education in San Francisco and lived in the Bay Area his entire life. While he occasionally painted on location in other parts of the world, his art career was primarily dedicated to painting abstract interpretations of Bay Area scenes that visually capture everyday life in that region. Post also taught watercolor painting at Stanford University, California College of Arts and Crafts and summer sessions at the Brandt-Dike School of Painting.

This watercolor, with its tilted-up plane hiding the horizon line, seems to owe its inspiration to Japanese prints. In fact, Post and his companion Elvin Fowler would spend two months in Japan in the late 1960s, as part of a round-the-world tour from 1968-69 – perhaps a little later than this painting, but indicating Post’s ongoing interest in Japan and its art.
