DescriptionRex Brandt’s watercolor, offered in a restrained palette of sandy tones, blues and purples, showcases surfers as they contemplate the waves. Fittingly for this beach scene, Brandt sprinkled salt on the wet paint, resulting in an interesting texture in some areas as the pigment was attracted to the salt granules. Brandt, praised by Westways magazine as “one of the central figures of California art of the mid-20th century,” was born in San Diego and earned a bachelor of arts degree at UC Berkeley. In 1937, he joined the California Water Color Society and soon thereafter organized “The California Group,” an exhibition of works by twelve artists that spurred great interest in the newly emerging California Style of watercolor. He became one of the best known of the California watercolor painters, operating a summer school of painting in Corona del Mar with his friend and fellow artist Phil Dike and influencing countless students who themselves would go on to great prominence in watercolor.
