DescriptionArtist Statement:In his travels throughout California, contemporary landscape painter Rick J. Delanty has been inspired by the power and beauty of the Big Sur coast. The towering cliffs, crashing waves, and fields of wild grass stretching up into the mountains and trees have been the seed of many paintings since he first visited that coast in the early 90’s. The colors, textures, breezes, and high clouds overhead have become a part of all the landscapes that Delanty has painted since then. Many types of paint brushes, painting knives and a variety of other tools have aided him in creating those natural-appearing textures of the visible landscape.
“Fortress Cove” is painted on a larger-scale, as the artist decided that the scale and breadth of the subject required a larger format. The artist’s Christian faith was the source of the idea for this painting, specifically Psalm 18:2 in the Scripture: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” In this geographical cove, the artist has found the stability, beauty, and power that reminds him, in his view of the world, of the attributes of the Creator who made this unique place.
